before Christmas i spent a week at the National Gallery with the
Princes Drawing School drawing "bad pictures of great pictures"!

Spending time in the NG and really looking at works that i have walked past many
times was a great revelation. I have a strong sense the importance of this collection
to the cultural intelligence of the western art. Perhaps this comes from a life
spent in the far reaches of its influence. These are the pictures I studied at school that
seemed mythological to me then.

the other great benefit is seeing the techniques that others use;
water pens to wash ink, folding stools, water soluble pencils.
